Leah’s and my parents had come to fetch the kids earlier in the day, so a group of us headed down to the main camp to join them at the lake.

A handful of campers were sunbathing in chairs along the shore, but they weren’t even close to the numbers I remembered from my childhood. All of them were older, too, and we were the only families with children. I’d never really doubted Susan, but seeing it in person really drove the point home. The camp itself hadn’t changed that much over the years, but the world had. One had stood still, while the other had moved on.

“Oh, wow,” Leah said quietly. Kara looked at us and silently agreed. We’d been coming to camp for more than twenty years, I realized. The changes probably hit us harder, but the others noticed too.

“No kidding,” Mark said. “I know you said… But… I mean… Wow.”

The kids weren’t the least bit sentimental. They only saw a lake that was too calm, too quiet, and far too empty for their liking.

“C’mon, Dad, let’s go,” Davis said.

“That’s my boy,” Trip chuckled. “Always has to be first.”

Wren rolled her eyes. “Go on, both of you.”

Father and son exchanged a grin and raced toward the water. Trip slowed to match his son’s pace, and they reached the edge at the same time. They both flattened into long arcs and dived into the water. Two heads broke the surface a moment later. Trip shouted a challenge, and they swam toward the raft.

The rest of us spread a couple of blankets on the grass, weighed them down with bags of toys and towels, and then lined up the younger kids for sunscreen. Even Christy used it these days, especially since her sister-in-law Sabrina had started sharing articles about the dangers of skin cancer.

Laurie was old enough to do it herself, all except her back. I helped her and kept an eye on Emily, who stubbornly refused help if Laurie could do the same thing by herself. She left lots of streaks and uncovered areas, and I had to stifle a laugh when I imagined what she’d look like if I didn’t fix it.

“All right, Flower,” I said to Laurie, “off you go.”

Emily started to run off as well, but I’d been ready for her.

“Whoa, there, Froggy! Not so fast. Let me see.”

“I did it.”

“I know, but let me check your work.”

“Ugh. Fine.”

I suppressed a smile and smoothed cream over her shoulders and down her untouched back. I wasn’t really worried about her burning, though. She and Laurie both had Christy’s complexion and would turn honey-brown before the week was out. Their hair would start turning the color of flax as well.

“You missed several spots,” I said. “If you’re going to do a job, do it right the first time, hmm?”

“I know,” Emily sulked.

“All right,” I said at last, “Aunt Wren has your water wings.”

“Laurie doesn’t need them.”

“Laurie doesn’t sink like a rock. You do. Now, go get your wings, my little frog princess.
